The Festival is held in autumn, a particularly beautiful season in the region, and has become synonymous with the intimacy, relaxed sophistication, vitality, and originate ingenious spirit which so quintessentially defines the town and the Goldfields' region. Broad avenues and adult European gardens fit hand in glove with the primarily Victorian and Edwardian architecture, a haven for artists, tourists and locals. This richness and diversity is evidenced by the variety of private studios and galleries that display locally produced art works. Around 400 practicing artists have made the region their home. The Festival preceded any other Victorian arts festivals and has been unique in its scope and diversity, and in its impact on the social and cultural fabric of the Mount Alexander Shire and environs. The Festival program has encompassed visual arts, music, theater, opera, and dance and has been a major contributor in connecting people and developing enterprise within the regional community. Many organizations in the community have participated schools, sporting groups, the local aged care facility, manufacturing and agricultural workers, street rod enthusiasts, musicians, designers, gardeners, heritage specialists, and the myriad of visual artists and artisans who live and work in the district. Each has brought their interests to the Festival, treading pathways to connection, reflection and innovation.

The arm of the Festival dedicated to presenting and producing works by local artists and companies. The Board and staff of the Castlemaine State Festival wishes to thank all of our sponsors, patrons, donors and supporters, and the many volunteers who are integral to the victory of the Festival. Volunteers are an crucial and much valued portion of the Castlemaine State Festival. The 2017 Castlemaine State Festival is fast approaching and again the victory of the Festival will rely on many dedicated volunteers. This will include detailed descriptions of the roles available, along with guidelines associated with the responsibilities of both the Festival and its volunteers, and will help volunteers in selecting their preferred roles. Taking mining as a metaphor, artists (from places as geographically and culturally diverse as Yirrkala, Castlemaine, Fresh Guinea and North Queensland) will explore themes implicit in the act of mineral exploration and exploitation. Awardwinning hip hop choreographer Robby Graham joins the 2017 Castlemaine State Festival as one of a number of internationally respected artists and mentors active with students at the Castlemaine Secondary College. Castlemaine Created is the arm of the Festival dedicated to presenting and producing works by local artists and companies.
